Overcoming Challenges of a Deep Trenchless Permeable Reactive Barrier Installation in Dense Geology

Deborah Schnell, P.E.

Summary

Whether using conventional or innovative methods, permeable reactive barrier (PRB) installations pose challenges. Adding complications like a deep installation (>50 feet), tight lithology, and a location in a residential setting require serious consideration during the pre-design phase.

In this webinar, nationally recognized PRB and fracturing expert, Deborah Schnell, P.E., will present a deep dive into a California site that faced all those challenges and more. She will provide an in-depth examination of the factors considered for a deep PRB installation in a tight lithology, using the Trenchless method or azimuth-oriented vertical hydraulic fracturing (aka vertical inclusion propagation or VIP), and discuss the off-site PRB that was part of a treatment train of other technologies previously conducted on-site. Deborah will also explain how this innovative passive remediation system was evaluated and implemented.
