Soil Vapor Monitoring Probes
Detection and monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are important health and safety measures, and partnering with professionals experienced in soil vapor probe installation is crucial to ensuring the work is done right. If installed or sealed improperly, leaks could occur and result in incorrect sample results and flawed project plans.
Soil vapor probes are used to detect VOCs, such as trichloroethene (TCE), benzene, and some polychlorinated biphenyls. These probes allow monitoring to occur in soil pore space as opposed to direct sampling of the soil itself. The data collected can be used to determine if remediation efforts are needed, or to help construct an in-depth conceptual site model (CSM) as part of a larger remediation plan.
Installation of soil vapor probes typically consists of soil removal down to the targeted depth via hand auguring or direct push technology (DPT) sampling equipment. A sand base is built in which the probe is set, then dry and hydrated bentonite is applied. If the well is permanent, a well box is also set.
Once installed, the probes allow soil vapor in the subsurface to pass through tubing into sample containers. A vacuum pulls the gas from the tubing through the probe and into a collection container, where the contents can be analyzed for VOCs.
