Project Highlight: In Situ Chemical Oxidation Pilot Study For Contamination Reduction

Environmental Construction

An Old Bridge site in New Jersey faced a complex contamination issue involving 1,4-Dioxane, PFAS, and VOCs. To address this, Cascade implemented an in situ chemical oxidation/stabilization (ISCO/ISS) pilot study, treating approximately 350 cubic yards of soil using hydrated lime, sodium persulfate, and Portland cement. The amendments were delivered via an excavator and skeleton bucket to depths ranging from 6 to 14 feet below grade, aiming to evaluate different chemical treatments for full-scale remediation.
  • Logistical Challenges: Crews faced a tight schedule and potential weather disruptions during the rainy season, but the project was completed on time and under budget with zero incidents.
  • Amendment Dosage: Multiple planning and execution methods were developed to ensure accurate amendment dosage.
